In addition to the Unconscious Bias (UB) Initiative, IEDE offers several workshops, events, and training series to the campus community. Play and Practice Series

Workshops included under the Play and Practice umbrella invite participants to settle into their habit of doing. These are active-engagement workshops that provide opportunities to test out strategies, center dialogue in the learning process, and move the work of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access beyond abstract theories and ideas. Current workshops for this series include the following:

Beyond Unconscious Bias: Intervention Practices

Staff and faculty who have completed all three-parts of the Unconscious Bias Initiative will be eligible to participate in Beyond Unconscious Bias: Intervention Practices. This session dives into the practice ethos of the IEDE office and provides attendees an opportunity to work through scenarios with colleagues to better understand the patterns of bias and potential intervention strategies. 

Session Outcomes:

  • Recognize patterns of bias
  • Articulate why structural support enhances bias intervention
  • Apply acquired strategies for future intervention(s)

60-Minute Workshop Series

IEDE offers several by-request workshops for teams, classes, or academic/administrative units. These sessions are designed to fit within a 60-minute time frame (or 50-minutes for classes on a M/W/F schedule, with a shortened Q&A) in order to accommodate standard meeting times and orientation sessions.

Requests for these workshops must be submitted at least 4 weeks in advance and will be honored based on availability.

Navigating Uncomfortable Conversations

IEDE offers this by-request workshop on navigating uncomfortable conversations in the context of diversity and inclusion for groups, departments, or classes. In this session, participants will explore how discomfort shows up and why embracing discomfort is critical to moving diversity and inclusion work forward.  This session runs 60-minutes with 15 – 20 minutes allotted for Q & A.

IEDE is accepting new requests for fall 2022 and beyond.

Minimum 15 participants.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Explore what it means to be comfortable with being uncomfortable
  • Examine discomfort in the context of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Apply strategies to stay engaged in uncomfortable conversations
  • Identify ongoing practices to sustain navigating discomfort in the context of diversity, equity, and inclusion

The Complexities of Bias (For Graduate and Professional Students)

Coming Fall 2022!

IEDE offers this by-request workshop for graduate and professional student groups, orientations, or classes. In this session, participants will explore different types of bias as they relate specifically to graduate and professional student roles and experiences. This session runs 60-minutes with 10 – 15 minutes allotted for Q & A.

IEDE will begin coordinating requests for this workshop in June 2022.

Minimum 15 participants.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define types of bias
  • Recognize how language contributes to bias
  • Understand the impact of microaggressions
  • Reflect on the dynamics of power
